I've not seen this species in the local pond before. It's some sort of Snadpiper - experts fill me in on the exact species - Spotted? With water levels pretty high this year there is an abundance of frogs. I suspect this was the target meal. I just had time to grab a quick shot before he fled the scene.

Nice image Tom, I "think" it's a juvenile Solitary Sandpiper. (according to "Birds of Western Canada")

Could be Heinrich.

My Peterson's Field Guide has a map which indicates that specie's (Solitary Sandpiper) range is north of my location in S. Ontario.

It could be migrating south at tis point however.

This is migration time for the wading shore birds. I really have to get out of the house and go look for some...

Solitary Sandpiper is common during fall migration in southern Ontario. Your bird is definitely a Solitary Sandpiper.

Thanks for the verification of species.

He was hunting alone at the time so I guess a "solitary" Sandpiper it is.

Thanks Bob,

Wish he would hang around for a while so I could get some more shots. This one is a little out of focus.

Best I could do on the fly.

Thanks for looking Jer,

Believe it of not it is the last day of August and already a lot of leaves are starting to change colour.

On the bright side we can expect some more migratory birds passing through.

On the down side winter can't be far off. Not that that will worry you much in the land of perpetual warmth.
