Fungi and Flowers

Summer's fading here in the hills of Tennessee. But late summer is bright with blooms and 'shrooms. Here are a few samples.

First our Tennessee State Wildflower. Passionflower is an abundant bloom of the late summer fields, and will soon be ripening its unique, slime-filled fruits...

Here's a summer meadow bloomer with a rather odd name. Was surprised to see how much the quality of light with passing clouds changed the appearance of these Sabatia blooms.

Late summer marshes and cool shores are the best places to look for Cardinal Flower.

Wet habitats are also the best for most mushrooms. Here are some boletes under the oaks. Something has already started nibbling them! Boletes are pored mushrooms - their spores come from tiny holes, called pores, under their caps

And here are three gilled mushroom species. Their pores come from between those thin ridges, called gills, under the caps. Sorry, I do not know which species these are...

But I do hope you enjoyed the "crop" of photos, and that you'll share your comments and suggestions.

Pretty slick macro work there! All good shots. Did you use a tripod?

Bob - We are blessed with two species of Passionflower in Tennessee - such fun to photo from different angles. Hoping to spot some Gulf Fritillary caterpillars on them...

OldGeaser - And thanks for taking time to comment!

Jerry - Thanks! Yes, nearly all of these were done with help of a tripod. Exception would be the bright orange mushrooms - these were taken at ground level, using the soil as the "tripod."

Eaglem - Thanks so much for your kind words!

Esrandall - We in East Tennessee are indeed blessed with much beautiful flora...
