A trip to the Zoo
Posted By: Stratman, 05-13-2008, 01:41 PM

Went to the St. Louis Zoo Monday, and got a few keepers..... Most of the outdoor animal shots are with the Tamron 70-300. Indoor animal shots, and lake shots with the DA 18-55.

Prarie dog posing..

Ostrich taking a breather..

Giraffe getting an illegal hand out..

Thirsty Gorilla

The Silverback Gorilla

Colorful Viper

Komodo Dragon

Best shot I could manage of the Orangutans unfortunately, might go back friday and see if i can do better.

The Giraffe detail is great~ just the CA from the stick is kinda strong.

You may want to increase black for the Komodo Dragon photo, I can see that the color shift because you shooting through glass.

Anyways Great captures~ Haven't been to a zoom for a long long time...

The indoor shots were really tough, lighting was mixed, plus for a Monday, the Zoo was PACKED with people, so loads of reflections on the glass. I did the best I could with the dragon, lol, it was a lot of work to get it to look as good as it does.

You say unfortunately with the orangutans but I think I like that one the best. It may not be the "perfect animal pose" with no obstructions but it shows some of the animal personality, some secretiveness (don't know if they're shy animals or not). With the brush in front of them I can imagine that you were out stalking them in the wild.

My main problem was that I got there so late, by the time I made it to the orangs and chimps, it was feeding time, lol. When I went to the chimp area, I had time to take two or three hurried shots while they ran to the indoor feeding area, and not one of them was worth a damn, <sigh >. Weather is SUPPOSED to be good again Friday, So I think I'll go back, and hit the ape area FIRST !!

Thanks Elle, I love it too !! Went to the butterfly house right after I got my first Pentax last year, and snapped off a ton of shots. Will maybe go back to the Zoo friday, and try some more ape shots..

I like the shot of the ostrich, that mark on the wall to the right is a similar size and shape to the ostrich neck and head. Maybe an ostrich wasn't looking and ran straight into the wall like Wile e Coyote in the Road Runner toons.
