Tonight's moon test with SMC A*1200 ED IF
Posted By: SCGushue, 05-13-2008, 08:00 PM

Those at NYC's latitude will note how high the moon was above the horizon tonight. I had to point the lens nearly straight up on the gimbal to sight the moon. Too much of a kink in the neck to stay at it for very long. The image below was f16 @ 1/30 sec.

Apparently, yes it does. There's even a picture. (Drool)

A* 1200/8 ED [IF]
I've handled rocket launchers that were smaller. OH MY GOSH.

Fantastic shot, by the way. Thanks for sharing.

Amazing shot! I don't think I've seen a moon shot that clear before.

Add the 1.4 and I bet you can find the flag or at least the base from the lunar module. You'll have to call NASA and find out the exact coordinates. Great shot and super sharp. Have you taken any terrestrial shots with it?

You'll have to add a picture to our lens review data base since this one is missing and you're probably the only one that will ever have this beast.

Here are the specs you can send Adam to update the database:

SMC Pentax-A* 1200mm f/8 ED [IF]
Angle of View (degrees) 2.1
Lens Construction (groups/elements) 8-9
Min. Aperture (f) 45
Min. Focusing Distance (m) 8.0
Max. Magnification (macro range) 0.16
Max. Diameter & Length (mm) 170.0 x 684.0
Filter Size (mm) 49
Weight (g) 8,580
Peter,

Thanks for the feedback. I will review it for the forum after a few more outtings. I was surprised just how stable the mount and gimbal were to allow 1/30th of a second. I'll try the moon with a 1.4X if the skies clear in the next week (not supposed to).

Modesty forbids me. But when I get batteries in the other camera the setup will be posted.

Borno, with the $ not worth diddly, the lens looked better than a month in Italy this summer.

SCG: OBTW - I've commented twice on this thread and neglected to state the (to me) obvious. That is a National Geographic level image - I keep coming back to look at it over and over. How on - Luna - did you focus that thing?

(I knew I shouldn't have let my mother throw those magazines away )

I saw the shot blown up in another forum and thought he took it from the spacestation...
MAN!!! a 27" lens and then add the camera. Look's like one of those Beer Funnels...

Just a great shot. maybe when I get rich I'll find a store that has one and look at it in the window.

Great shot but Stephen you know that it's not fair when you're so much bigger than everyone else here on the board.

Hmmm...

Here goes...

Nice shot, but couldn't you get a little closer?

Mono,
Thank you for such a wonderful comment. I don't think NG will be knocking on my door soon but it would be fun though.

I have to say one thing about all the A* ED IF lenses. They focus like a charm. Smooth, solid and without any play at all, and the thrown in rotation is so short that near to infinity is only a fraction of 360 degrees. Absolutely top level lenses.

Gus, stop by one night when the moon is out and we can put your camera on there too.

FLG, Thanks. I havn't posted on the other forum in some time. But, Chris Gunn thought it would be neat to see the details and asked that I make a larger image if possible. I was surprised at just how much more detail showed when post at 1500 pixels long. So, thank you for looking and taking the time to post here too. I'll post a link to that shot after an edit to my original post as an edit shortly.

Chris... all's fair in love and war. Right? I'll try to get a little closer when I mount the dedicated Pentax 1.4X on the lens sometime within the next week or so. I
never purchased a 2X for these lenses but that would be fun someday.?

Thanks everybody,
Stephen

Aahhh, great glass is sooo nice - beautiful capture! Makes me want for a longer lens.... well done!!!!

Hmmm, now maybe I should take that Sigma 500/4.5 + 1.4X APO TC and see how that turns out.... of course, it won't be anything like yours!
