From our travels, the Painted Desert. I got the perfect weather and light photographing this area I think, the partially overcast sky and then a heavy rainstorm brought out the color in this sometimes bland and arid desert landscape.

Yes, Bob, the lighting is perfect for showing that landscape. It makes one wonder what occurred to cause it to form like that. It is amazing that it just seems to start suddenly. TFS.

I dig 'em both, bud - particularly the first one. What an alien landscape - amazing. I haven't seen it "in the flesh" for decades.

there are several geologists on the forum Ray and they could explain it much better than I can. I do know this was once an ancient sea or lake bed and millions of years of build up on the floor causing different colored strata. I would imagine that iron oxides have helped with the reddish colors. .

The first one is particularly nice. Might those be the old Route 66 telephone poles? I recall a roadside exhibit there about them, complete with derelict car.

Kyle, I was surprised that someone hadn't taken the grill and bumper.

hey bud, erosion improves an area each year and the Petrified Forest is adjacent to the park and the Grand Canyon isn't too far away. Hint!

We got a couple of storms that day and it really changed the colors, that along with the changing sunlight made it a great day to photograph.

Scott, we are on our 10th year of being on the road fulltime and still having fun. This may be the best thing I've ever done, with the exception of getting married, my wife just reminded me btw.

for sure bud, a little different than your area but you would enjoy a visit down this way, lots of other things to do and see.
