the Hummingbird Moth
Posted By: Bob Harris, 10-08-2014, 09:47 PM

the way they quickly flit and flitter from flower to flower, this is a hard insect to capture. Much harder than a hummingbird that often stays stationary for awhile. I was happy to get the fully extended tube-like proboscis in two of the photos.

That's the black and yellow bumblebee mimic type sphinx moth. I see the hummingbird mimic more frequently, though.
you've got some great photos on your flicker page, thanks for sharing the bee/moth shot, I don't think we have them in the s/w.

Nice captures! I've never seen these here in Texas, but saw quite a few growing up in Iowa.
I got this one in Colorado and I did see one while in Pahrump NV once Paul, but that's about it. None in the Banning area either.

Nice images Bob, the only place that I have ever seen any was in the Yukon but they had different coloration. Never did get any in flight pictures.

I've heard the mosquitoes are as big as birds up there Heinrich, maybe a photo of them next time.
