Girl in a bar
Posted By: Hattifnatt, 10-09-2014, 01:10 AM

Met this girl in a bar, she did not allow me to take photos of her saying she was not photogenic, but a bit later she wasn't looking so I took my chance! she liked the picture afterwards

I don't think such a photo justifies to ignore a clear "no".

The reason I chose to disregard the initial "no" was because her motivation was such she was not photogenic. It was not like a "you will not take my picture no matter what", but more like "no, I'm not photogenic/I'm not pretty" kinda denial. But I agree I might have walked a pretty thin line here and maybe even crossed it a bit, luckily for me it turned out fine.

I rather like this photo. Part of the reason I like it is because it is anonymous, and therefore universal.

I think people are attempting to argue the rights and wrongs of candid portraits from a rigid and unconsidered viewpoint here. People are recognised by their faces, not their backs. This is the main reason for banks requiring people to remove helmets and the like when they enter, not to mention the current fusses over women wearing face-coverings in various situations. People mostly object to having their photo taken when they're not in control of how they look, although that's probably how they look most of the time. Genuine privacy fears are rare, but are based around the ability to identify someone by their face, not their rear aspect. I don't believe respect would have come into it in this instance, except that the photographer brought the subject's attention to the fact, and thereby created an obligation to consider the subject's wishes.

But for the smartphone on the table, this photo could probably have been taken any time in the last 50-60 years. The PP gives it a sort of timelessness that really appeals to me. Nice work!

Thank you... I've just now noticed that smartphone. I pretty much don't like it there but it's too late now.

Great image. In my experience, its difficult to sell "art" to the general public if there is a recognizable face - this avoids that issue but still conveys mood, emotions, a common scene. Wondeful!

I don't think it (smartphone) takes anything away from the overall image. I'm just picky like that.

I've just seen it too as a result of this post, but hey it could disappear in a heart beat in PP if you so desired.
