Ricketts Glen
Camera: K-3

From my trip to the Poconos last week and a hike through Ricketts Glen:

It was a ~3.5 mile R/T hike 1000 feet down and a 1000 feet back up (and nearly all stairs). Left the parking lot at 7a and got back to car about 4p. Was probably one of the most enjoyable hikes I've undertaken. Glad I got a chance to scratch it off my bucket list.

Very nice! It is a real treasure we have here, and I have a 20"x30" hanging in my living room from my autumn visit.

Doesn't sound like a fun hike, more like a route march with full kit.

In theory, yes. In fact I was very worried about my stamina coming out of hibernation season here in AZ (summer), so I actually scaled down the planned hike and skipped 3 waterfalls which would have added 1 mile R/T to the route. But what I found was that every 100-200 yards at most was a waterfall, which presented a roughly 30 minute break between sets of stairs. I actually went faster going up than I did coming down because there were fewer photo stops.

I had also allocated a full 10 hours for the hike and packed a gallon of Gatorade six bolilo rolls and a pound of meat and cheese. At about 1230 (right on schedule) I reached the half way point, and spent enough time eating and recovering that the hike up wasn't nearly as bad as I had thought. I had also decided not to carry my external flash, extra filters, my sigma 100-300 and my FA 100 macro in my pack, so it only weighed about 20 lbs (with full kit it weighs about 30 lbs). I think the extra 10 lbs savings also helped.

It was also a cool (low 60's) overcast day (perfect for waterfalls) so I didn't get overheated. It was a "fantastical" place, between the diffused light through all the trees and the sound of waterfalls echoing through canyons. I don't think I've said "wow" and "oh, cool" so many times in one day before.

I must say, I like the way you roll.

Otherwise, great shots--my wife is from Wilkes-Barre, so I've kicked around in that country quite a bit. Do give a thought to Lyme disease, though, if you're doing much more bushwacking...there's a pretty heavy deer population (and thus ticks) in that part of the world.

It's not the easiest of hikes, but it's certainly worth it. These are great photos & bring back memories! I managed it several years ago - slowly & on crutches - but got all the way down and all the way back up in a day.

Ricketts Glen is wonderful isn't it? It's a little over a half hours drive from my mother's house near Bloomsburg. I visited back in 2009 and did the entire "down and up" circuit as well (dang near killed me... LOL). Next time I am going to start at the bottom Check out my shots at https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/12-post-your-photos/67138-ricketts-glen-state-park-pa.html

I remember those shots Mike. Difficult exposures done well. Right on the edge of blowing out the highlight. Nicely done. JIM

Nice photos. I have a LOT of pictures from Ricketts Glen, it seems it's really gaining in popularity, but I honestly hope not much! I go there probably 5-10 times a year.
