Solar Eclipse
Lens: Sigma 150-500mm Camera: Pentax K3 Photo Location: Round Top, Texas ISO: 100 Shutter Speed: 1/4000s Aperture: F8

As I was cleaning a client's house, they were watching the news and said look outside it's a solar eclipse. Well I just finished cleaning and was putting away supplies so I quickly finished up and managed to get some very unprepared shots. As I did this I wondered how one takes a photo of a solar eclipse. I knew I had no filters for that or even what filter one uses for it. On the way home I wondered what the eclipse photos would look like when they were posted. Wow with the right filter there are sunspots! What I was looking at was too bright to look at and the sky was very orange and strands of clouds. Is it usually orange around the eclipse? The photo I ended up with looked more like an adobe altered abstract silhouette. Neat affect but not accurate rendition of the solar eclipse.

The eclipse was so glaringly Orange and yellow that I couldn't hardly look at it so I just set the ISO to it's lowest and the shutter speed very high and adjusted from there. Then after maybe 10 min's it sank down past the horizon and it was gone. I didn't know if the brightness could damage the sensor so I kept it quick when shooting.

I see you putting that new 150-500 Sigma to good use. Great composition.

Very cool - This would make a great album cover in the late '60s and early '70s. Terrific effect and look.

That was my initial first thought and not a straight out of the camera shot, so well done indeed.

The image I posted was from this batch of photos, it was altered in Lightroom, I made it to look similar to this image that is straight out of the camera. It was in Pef but saved in a jpg to post here. I only removed a couple of dust specks that the extreme light from the sun made very reflective and showed up as bright flecks instead of the usual dark speck. The eclipse was so bright that all I could see was extreme yellow and orange rays. I had to set the ISO to 100 and the shutter speed very high and then I put the camera on live view. I had a tree branch to brace the big lens on. And this is one of the unaltered images from that batch. Lol my clients that I clean for was impressed with the K3 and big Sigma. I had actually just finished mopping their floors.
