I've been seeing lots of high quality images from Olympus cameras over on 500px. How do you like it?
Hi,
I have used a bunch of 4/3rds cameras - E-1, E-300, E-500, E-510 and E-3 as well as E-PM1 and E-PM2. So that might tell you that I do like them
.
In retrospect, the E-3xx and E-5xx were very basic. It was ok for me at the moment, because I was a beginner, but now they would be limiting. The kodak sensors in E-300, E-500 and E-1 have a very pleasant look to their image. Gradients seem to be smoother on base iso than in CMOS, which makes sense since you don't have a separate amplifier at every pixel.
E-1 and E-3 are excellent. Their image quality is not up to par, but using those cameras is a pleasure. They are comfortable to hold, have silent shutters without any vibration, they are quick and responsive and have nice viewfinders. The user experience is top notch. All 4/3rds cameras also have a very good build quality.
Lenses are great and many are inexpensive. 40-150mm F3.5-4.5 is a steal at some $50, 14-45mm is very good too, but I would get a 14-54mm F2.8-F3.5, because you can have one for $130 these days. 50-200mm F2.8-3.5 is something I am thinking of getting too because it is probably the best optical quality 100-400 you can get for $400.
In short, I take E-3 with me in good light for shots where quality is not critical, because it's just so much fun to shoot with. For street I take an E-PM2 because of the touch screen and quick focus. For everything else I use my K-30.
