Dangerous romance!
Lens: DA* 300mm f4 Camera: Pentax K5II Photo Location: Lake Louisa, Florida
Posted By: MetteHHH, 11-05-2014, 04:21 AM

robjmitchell told me in this thread (https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/12-post-your-photos/277441-nature-not-really-macro.html) that the huge halloween-decoration-spiders at our cabin at Lake Louisa were golden orb weavers. They were definitely fascinating, and I took quite a few pictures of them.

This one was snacking on a dragonfly, when a male decided that now would be the safest time to make his advances. I think his timing was brilliant, and by the looks of it he succeeded and survived!

Ooooh...I love how much activity and storytelling you captured in this shot....of course the insect world is fascinating in capturing the detail of the minature, buteven more so when you capture story and in this case two seperate stories, coming together.....what happens next? Was he going in for some possible lunch or.....was it a more romantic adventure?

Thanks!

Definitely romance! I shot the whole sequence, but once they get tangled up the composition is messier... so I prefer this one. I would guess he didn't ask her to share lunch - "stay away from her mouthparts" would be MY favorite mating strategy, if I was male. And a spider.

sneeking up from behind while she is in the kitchen preparing lunch.....I can see how this would have the best composition and clarity in the sequence...the dragonfly is still very visible as well.....thanks for the post shot update though...there is much to be learned from the insect world, as well as our fellow photographers....

Lots going on here -- very cool. What a difference in the size of the male/female -- yikes!

It is great that humans have all in a different way!

I thought all romances were that way, OK I admit you don't always end up as lunch.

An image with great clarity in the subjects, well done.

Thank you very much, Kerrowdown!

Since you phrase it like that, I sort of feel I should say that I took a last minute leap and bought Topaz Clarity with the October rebate (which I shouldn't because all my recent gear wrecking led to me promising not to buy extra photo related stuff - but hey it was 25% off... )

Anyway, I ran a bit of PP on this in clarity to bring out the silk strands of the web a bit, and I have to say I am very happy with the purchase. I normally process raw files in Lightroom, and clarity works as a plug in, and it just does the job better than what I can accomplish in LR by myself.

What a great capture of the web... almost craquelure in its appearance.

...and, Jean Poitiers - you stumped me with that acronym. I tried to work it out (Terribly Fearsome Spiders? Two Furrylegged Sweethearts? Totally Fluffy Spiderweb?) - then I tried googling it (Toyota Financial Services? Team Four Star? Tanzania Forest Service?) - then I gave up!

Thanks - and what is TFS?
