Aurora
Lens: SMC Pentax M 50mm f1.4 Camera: Pentax K-m Photo Location: Tromsø, Norway ISO: 100 Shutter Speed: Above 6s

Met a lovely woman from Florida last night who had come to our beautiful city to see the northern lights. I told her that the forecast didn't look good for tonight, she might not get to see anything. As we were talking, some of the most spectacular aurora I've ever seen appeared in the sky. Guess I was wrong!

The second one is out of focus, I know-- my lens fogged up.

Very nice. Where do you live to get such nice displays. I haven't seen them since I was a young boy living in Montana.

Haha, yeah, I'm a lot farther north than Montana! I live in Tromsø, Norway-- we're at about 69º north, so we're right on the aurora belt.

I love the feel of the second shot, the aurora directly above a cloud-topped snowy mountain looks beautiful. Only that light on the tower to the right keeps this from being a perfect composition.

Where in Norway was this, exactly?

Tromsø. If you imagine Norway as an arm wearing a mitten, we're about at the elbow, and right under the aurora belt. It's probably one of the best (urban) areas in the world to see the northern lights.

That's a strangely effective comparison . The town indeed looks like a winter paradise: frozen waterfront, majestic mountainous backdrop and the aurora to top it all off!
