New Zealand Wood Pigeon

The New Zealand Wood Pigeon.
Walking through a friend's rural garden and drat - only had the kit lens on!

Yes, I think it was getting ready to fly off - I was pretty close.

Well done - you must have been very close! Looks a lot like an Australian Wompoo Pigeon.

I had to go and google that. Very interesting!
And yes, I was - unfortunately I had the 18-55mm lens on and no time to swap to a longer lens or it would have been gone!

Still, you got a pretty good shot. You've also reminded me that another reason I need to visit NZ is to see a bunch of bird species!

Nice shot. Perhaps its just the perspective, but the body looks to be pretty large!!!!

No not just perspective... they are duck sized...

This one was probably just about a foot long from beak to tail.

Just luck. Was standing under the tree when it swooped down and landed. Not sure who got the bigger surprise!
