2014 Colby Fire
Posted By: crewl1, 11-11-2014, 12:59 AM

In January we had an early start to our California fire season, with one of the driest and hottest winters on record.
QuoteQuote:
The Colby Fire was a wildfire in the Angeles National Forest. It was ignited along the Colby Truck Trail in the San Gabriel Mountains in northern Los Angeles County, United States. The fire started on January 16, 2014 and eventually burned 1,992 acres. On January 25, the Colby Fire had burned 1,962 acres, and was 98% contained.[8][11] The fire, which was fanned by strong Santa Ana winds, destroyed 5 homes, injured one person, and forced the evacuation of 3,600 people at its peak.[8][8][9]
Three men in their early 20s were arrested for recklessly starting a fire, and have allegedly admitted starting an illegal campfire that blew out of control.
It was thrilling for me to be able to get close enough to see how the firefighters on the ground and in the air worked to get the fire under control.

The air attack was a ballet orchestrated by an air boss from a small airplane circling the site and directing the aircraft to make drops on hot spots and also keep them from crashing into each other.

Sadly we lost a pilot this year while battling a fire in Yosemite, he was flying a tanker similar to the white one seen dropping the orange fire retardant.

Fingers crossed that next year will bring us some much needed rain.

Nice shooting Larry. It's impressive watching the tankers make their runs.
Thanks, it is amazing to watch.

Thank you very much. It was fortunate my vantage point was upwind of the fire ind it was a rather calm day so all the smoke was blowing away from us.
The other way around and I would not have been able to see or wanted to stay.

Sorry for the tragedy, but excellent shots. Like the previous posters said, I think those would be some great action shots to give to those brave firefighters.

Great shots and narrative Larry, it's so sad to see these fires in action but I think photos like this remind us to use caution in our lives.

Great shots, but that first one is absolutely awesome! I think you could get that into the PEG.

Wow ! you had a nice point of view !
Hey, the yellow airplanes are from Quebec ! They are made by Bombardier, an home company that we are proud of... Amphibious Aircraft - Bombardier 415 and 415MP - Bombardier Aerospace
they are amphibious, they collect water from lakes without stopping. Have you hade a chance to capture the moment they collect water ?
thanks for sharing !

The French use the same planes for the fires in the south of France.

Thanks! I did not get to see the actual scoop process as it was happening at a larger reservoir a few miles away.
If I ever have the opportunity I would like to see it. The helicopters could fill up at a smaller pond not too far away so I was able to get some shots of that.
These planes really help us a lot, I recall the big announcements when a few were purchased a couple of years ago as we sorely needed them.

I don't think there is anything as efficient at dropping that much water so accurately on the fires, so I am sure most places can use them.
