Barrel Races
Lens: Sigma 80-200mm f2.8 Camera: K5ii Photo Location: Elbert Colorado

I have been out photographing Gymkana's since about June of this year outdoors. Now with winter here they have moved indoors and wow it isn't too easy getting enough light to come through without using a flash (which is allowed). So here are the 4 I picked from this last weekend.

These are my attempts of showing motion.

Cool shots! I am supposed to shoot a barrel racing event with a guy in January using his Canon gear, but your Pentax setup seems to do decent. If these were without the flash, there could have probably been a decent bit more stoppage with an HSS flash or higher ISO. How is the autofocus speed on your 80-200 with the k5ii?

Thanks willskywalker93, I have been very happy with the K5ii and the Sigma 80-200. Mine is a older version but works great. I normally am shooting at 800-1600 ISO. have even had the shutter speed down to 1/100 and came away with decent results and I have had no problems with the auto focus. I am normally shooting around one barrel per run. So I normally focus on the barrel between runs. Then when the run starts the camera doesn't have much auto focusing to do.

I have mixed emotions using a flash with the horses. Sure would hate for one of them to get spooked by it. Then it and or the rider gets injured. Just don't think I could sleep well at night thinking about that.

Thanks
Jim

touche. I did not even think of that. Spooked horse would make for a terrible day at the rodeo.

Nice results ! I'd say you could boost the iso even a bit more... have you tried panning on the running horses ?
