Do a little dance...
Posted By: RobG, 11-16-2014, 03:19 AM

Only the adult male Satin Bowerbird sports this amazing blue plumage after the age of about 5 years. This guy hasn't built himself a bower yet (a u-shaped avenue woven from sticks), but he's got a display ground and was putting a lot of effort into his song and dance routine. He had the attention of two females (or young males). The thing which surprised me in this photo was the amazing colour in his eye! It's like it's glowing from the inside!

It makes me wonder if the reason that they like blue things is because those colours look brightest when you see the whole world through blue tinted eyes.

Thanks! Here's a photo I took in 1985 of a Satin Bowerbird in Queensland. Not only was the woven bower a work of art, he also painted it.

Excellent, Rob. Great job and on a difficult, dark subject.
