Alternative processing
Posted By: ftpaddict, 05-22-2008, 07:37 AM

I've tried different methods of processing and different software. Tell me which one you like best.

The picture was shot with a K100D and SMC PENTAX-A 50mm f/1.7 @ ISO 200

1st up: Edited with Virtual Photographer

2nd: Edited with Virtual Photographer

3rd: Edited with Virtual Photographer

4th: Edited with Adobe Lightroom 1.1

5th: Edited with Raw Therapee

So which one do you like best?

The first one is my favourite, by the way.

#1 is my fave, but there's something I like about #4 as well. I think it's probably because it's a little brighter and shows some more detail (on my monitor at least) of the fence. I still think #1 is the best, but #4 is a close second for me.

Thank you for the feedback. I guess it's a tie between #1 and #4 so far.

I prefer #1. On my monitor, the colors of #1 are more vibrant.

Me too, in the lightroom processed image the colors are not very vibrant.

I like #1 because of the way the leaf is brough strongly to the fore. The dark rendering of the fence offers the leaf good support without distraction, yet retains enough detail to encourage more exploration of the whole image. Lovely composition.

#4 looks like the most realistic image. it looks like each app used diff settings to process the raw?

Lightroom uses ACR
Raw Therapee uses DCRAW (open source)
XNView uses a proprietary method, somewhat based on DCRAW.
XNView is a free image viewer that supports photoshop plugins. Virtual Photographer is a Photoshop plugin (also free).

And I guess the one processed with Virtual Photographer was the most favoured.

I like number 1 the best. Somehow more punch and depth.

i really like the 2nd one the best.. the colour versions are too busy in my oppinion. with the 2nd one, youre attention is drawn directly to the leaves, rather than wondering around looking at the gate.
