HDR Shell Game
Posted By: Sailor, 05-22-2008, 06:21 PM

A couple or three weeks ago, I pulled out my DFA 100 and did some "staged" macro shots of sea shells - I did three exposures and then used the HDR compiler on PSP X2 to meld them. The first one is - obviously - the color version followed by the B&W conversion of that HDR shot.

I rather like the B&W better, but what do ya'll think?

The B&W has the timeless and effective look .They do say B&W and classic under the same breath

The conversion really makes the shell sing. I can almost here the sea in it.

B&W for me as well - as much for it pops more I think and it gets rid of the pink background which is a bit overwhelming I think.

one should use HDR where the dynamic range is beyond the ability of the image sensor to capture.

i dont see how a seashell in controlled lighting conditions could possibly take advantage of multiple exposures

Thanks, everybody, for the kind replies. BTW, the lighting wasn't controlled - it was pouring in from an open front door (by "staged" I meant that the shell was sitting on one of my wife's placemats). The HDR treatment allowed me to get some detail in the shadowed left side of the shell without blowing out the right side. Perhaps there are better ways of handling the contrast, but I tried HDR - it's a "new toy" after all.

Speaking of sea shells, I'm heading up to the marina and a weekend of sailing, during which I sincerely hope to stay on the upper side of the water line - and not visit shells in their natural environment.
