About one half of a large display at the Tenmangu Shinto shrine in Kiryu, Gunma Prefecture. It lists the names of all the people/businesses in the area who donated money to help pay for the restoration work on the shrine's buildings.....together with the amount of money they gave. You can see the same sort of thing carved in stone at Buddhist temples. What until recently I had assumed were inscriptions of prayer or scripture it actually turns out more often than not were the names of those who had chipped in, again, together with the amount. Carved deep into stone for your neighbors and subsequent generations of the neighbors offspring to see. At least these wooden tags will fade and rot in a few years.
If you can read Japanese at all, zoom in and be astounded by some of the amounts.
