Orchid
Lens: DA*300 f4 Camera: K5iis Photo Location: Canberra, Australia ISO: 400

I was surprised to find two different native orchids flowering at Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve today!

The image is surprisingly sharp considering that it was hand held using the DA*300 and DA HD 1.4 TC.

Certainly more interesting than the typical Dendrobium speciosum!

Also very small; each flower is probably about the size of your thumbnail.

I dig the selective focus on these gorgeous flowers - nice, Rob.

Thanks Jer - hand held with the DA*300 and 1.4TC doesn't leave a lot of choice other than narrow DOF.

Beautiful color and, as others have said, very sharp and effective despite the shallow DOF. Any idea what species of orchid this is?

Thanks! I've asked the folks at the reserve - I'm hoping to hear back from them mid week. If not, I'll try emailing the Australian National Botanic Gardens - they have some Orchid experts there.

One of the staff at Tidbinbilla tells me that it's a Blotched Hyacinth Orchid. The other one I saw on the same day was a Rosy Hyacinth Orchid. Here's the two side by side:
