Not sure I would consider the woman in the first picture as on a date and if she is am not sure her reading the paper instead of talking to her partner is any better than what the youngsters are doing in the second shot. We are slowly losing our ability to communicate with each other I fear.

She is on a date alright. Her partner has gone to order a huge seafood feast. Meanwhile she occupies herself reading the menu in anticipation.

They are communicating. They're texting each other or FB Messaging. I have actually sat and watched my daughter and her committed beau have a FB Message conversation sintting next to each other on a couch.*

* They didn't want anyone else in the room to hear what they were saying.
