Great Ocean Road 1989

The Great Ocean Road, Victoria Australia some time in December 1989. I've been back several times since and the weather was never so perfect, the ocean never so blue. The Twelve Apostles don't look the same anymore!

Here's how the coastline at the Twelve Apostles looked 23 years later; July 2012.

Loch Ard Gorge, named for a ship which ran aground nearby in the 1800's. Photo taken in 1989 on Fujichrome 100.

Thanks! I was surprised how some large features have gone but smaller ones have survive unchanged.

What a fascinating place, but the change is startling. Loch Ard Gorge is an amazing sight.

Well, the next year a span of London Bridge collapsed, leaving London Arch and two tourists stranded who had to be rescued by chopper!

Thanks Jer! Hopefully one day I can visit again when it's so calm and sunny.

According to Wikipedia it was on 15 Jan 1990 and if so, my memory of the timing is completely wrong. The way I remember it, I visited the Great Ocean Road while driving from Adelaide to Canberra, and I saw the news about the collapse on the TV the night I arrived in Canberra. If that's true, the slides must have been taken in January 1990 not December 1989. I should have kept a diary! If only there was EXIF data back then!

Thanks! I'll have to go digging in my slide collection and see if I can find the slide of London Bridge before it collapsed.
