[photo analysis] guesstimate the lens/lighting?
Posted By: sashae, 05-28-2008, 05:45 AM

Hey all,

I recently picked up a Japanese magazine called Jitensya-Jin (a bicycle lifestyle magazine) and it contained a great article on NYC cyclists. There were a number of excellent portraits taken in the article, and I'm really interested to try to figure out how they were done.

In looking at this photo in particular, can anyone guesstimate the length of the lens used? It's a fabulous photo... pardon the poor scan quality, as my scanner is somewhat bunk.

I'd guess that it was taken with something in the 50mm range or wider, depending on where the shooter was standing.

I'm thinking a bit more telephoto. Maybe 135mm, but unless someone knows for sure, we'll never be able to say exactly.

I know the shop that that photo was taken in, and there's at most 10-15' of space from where she's standing to the back wall of the shop, if that's helpful.

Tele!? No way...
I am thinking more toward wide. Look at the background. There is really some depth in the pic. And it shows in the pretty large DOF, too.
So IF we are talking 35mm format (CMOS sensor, x1.5), this will be more in the range 28-40 mm.

That's my thought.

A friend of a friend knows the photographer (Japanese guy who's apparently still in NY), so I'm going to try to find out firsthand. There were several other portraits in the article that I found quite appealing as well, but the one above was my favorite.

The rest of the scans (including about 4 more portraits) are available here if anyone is interested.
