Getting the Point
Lens: 50mm f/2.8 Camera: K 5 Photo Location: Desert Hot Springs CA ISO: 400
Posted By: Bob Harris, 02-03-2015, 09:25 PM

I took a hike into the Mojave Desert to take macro photos of different types of cacti spines that are used to protect the plants from predators and weather. No matter if it is the prickly pear, cholla or barrel cactus, contact can be very painful and I've found out it's hard to remove the spikes from the body.

Dang, Bob - I see this first thing in the morning and now I'll live in fear all day. Especially after reading these spikes would be difficult to extricate from my scrawny carcass!

Seriously, ain't nature amazing?

Cool shots, Bob! Every time I see a cactus I think of Wile E Coyote falling into one!

Every time I see a cactus I remember once, while trying to get the right angle of a mountain shot, sitting on one. I can attest to the fact that the spines of the cholla are especially hard to remove from your carcass. Nice shots Bob. They really get the point across!

yeah buddy, they have barbed tips, easy to go in and hard to get out. A friend of mine said putting olive oil on the wound would soften them up, hopefully you and me don't have to try that out.

G'day Bob

Thorn devils all right. We have prickly pear over here too. It was introduced many years ago and is now considered a noxious weed. It once took over millions of acres of prime agricultural land. In the end it was defeated by a grub. There are memorials to the "Cactoblastis" grub in several Queensland towns. Some folks still grow it for the fruits and decorative purposes.

who would of thought an insect would defeat the mighty cacti. Thanks for the link Bruce, turns out insects are farmer friends.
