Blown away - Sigma 70-300 APO - Daughter's first soccer game
Posted By: Gadget_Guy, 05-30-2008, 08:22 PM

Being the proud dad I just HAD to bring my kit along with me tonight for my Daughter's first Soccer game (she is 4)... the little one is my other daughter (2y)

Here she is in all her glory...

I brought the whole kit but only the Sigma 70-300mm APO stayed on the camera the whole time.

Here is what is amazing. It was a dark, overcast sky, not a lot of light at all.. No flash gun.... and these are the shots:

All were taken in RAW mode with my K10D, brought into Lightroom, cropped, resized to post here and that is all.

Most were shot at full 300mm.

ZERO adjustments.

(The camera recently came back from Pentax after having been adjusted for FF and Exposure problems... I think they got it fixed)

Let me know what you think.... I love this lens!

Without spending a fortune... what is Fast Glass?

What should I be looking for?

I was refering to focussing speed rather than maximum aperture.

WOW... great responses people... I really appreciate all the advice!

I am going to try all the suggestions next friday at her next game.

Going through all my shots I realize that I indeed was all over the map on the focal lengths... not sure why I thought I was using it to the extent.

I was shooting in Sv mode the whole time, auto white balance, Auto AF Point, multi-segment Metering.

I will try Tv and TAv next time.

As for the big reason I was so blown away was the colours and the brightness of the shots. It was VERY overcast with very little light.... The shots really do look like a bright sunny day. I did not EV compensation on these.

Been using the same lens for the exact same thing. Is there some softness at 300? Sure, but what do you want for $200, lol? Without dropping $500-$1000 on a lens and/or TC, there really isn't much better. My ususal method is to shoot in TAv mode. With kids this age, you can get away some pretty slow shutter speeds, but I'd say go for 1/500-1/750 (or higher if you can) anyway. You should see maximum sharpness between f/8 and f/11, but I usually give that up for less depth of field (more blurred backgrounds). That's a choice for you to make. As to ISO, for now limit it to a max of 800, but as you get more comfortable with shooting, there will be some situations where you can get away with 1600 and not really notice any additional noise.

Nice shots. I've found that bumping the contrast quite a bit helps pop the images, which can look flat otherwise.
