Thanks - it's fantastic that there's dedicated people keeping things like the Meteor and Avon Sabre flying. I believe the folks at Temora are also working on bringing a Mirage IIIO back to flying condition as well. That would be a fantastic thing to see. I once was a passenger in a light aircraft waiting to take off at Williamtown and watched an entire squadron of Mirages land.

I imagine it would depend on how fast the subject is moving and whether the AF can keep up with it. I have a Promaster 80-300 which focuses a LOT faster than the DA*300, but the latter is far better optically. If only Pentax would upgrade the motors in the DA*300 to the same sort of speed! It's not like the technology is new either; the Promaster dates from 1997. Anyway, if your subject is moving very fast and you are using the high speed shutter (H mode) on the K3, the focus may not be tracking as fast as the shutter is firing. You could set the camera so that it only releases the shutter when lock is achieved, but personally I don't do that. If you have a moving target, there may not be time to achieve a lock, let alone maintain it.

PS More photos from the Air Show here!

Nice shots! I arrived late on Sunday morning and the queues were horrendous so I didn't go in, sadly. The light ended up being the best that day for photographing aircraft in flight!

Yeah, I got in around nine from the Geelong side, then out by two o'clock. Didn't wish to spend half an afternoon stuck in traffic. :-)

Unfortunately you would have missed the best part - the demo which featured almost everything the RAAF has! But I don't blame you, considering the crowds. I hope you got some photos of the biplanes and triplanes in flight. I'm going to post photos of them later.

I took a similar image of the C17 engine, using the K-3 in-camera HDR.

Which tanker is that, visible in front of the C-17?

It's a JASDF Boeing 767 tanker. There was also a USAF KC135.
