Black Sand Beach

Black Sand Beach in Wainapanapa State Park. Black color is due to the (relatively) recent formation of the sand created by volcanic flow.

I love it out in Hana.

If you know where to go you can get sand of all different colors. Red, black, yellow, white, and green to name a few. You would have to island hop to get the green sand.

Which island has a green sand beach? Would love to go there on my next visit.

Just looks so wrong when compared to golden beaches.

I wonder if these get hotter then normal beaches, by absorbing rather than reflecting heat?

The Big Island. You have to do a little off road adventure and/or some hiking but it's there.

No they are fine. These beaches are really coarse sand. Basically tiny polished pebbles. They are not like your regular powder sand. But they don't get too hot.

What a beautiful spot to be. Looks isolated too. Odd to see a beach with no one on it.

We were lucky to find this beach isolated. Many people do a day trip to Hana from other parts of Maui. We were staying in a cabin 5 min away from this beach so we went early in the morning before all the tourists arrived.
