This tuesday was a fantastic Aurora. Lucky to at last find a place away from fog and light pollution

Well, in reality, the northern lights certainly don't look nearly as vivid with the naked eye - if my experience in Iceland in September is anything to go by. They are ethereal and engaging but ghostly pale green. The purples are only visible on longer exposures and that strength and vividness of the colours doesn't appear in real life. OK, in Iceland when I was there we saw the aurora when on small farmsteads / villages, so there was a bit of light pollution but not much.

Still, striking images.

The camera has the big advantage of long exposure to build up the light and colours. You are right that with the naked eye the aurora most often looks pale green.

We had aurora activity for hours yesterday again, a majestic final for this season. Now follows 4 months of not-enough-dark-night.
