Easter Lily Cactus-2
Lens: Sigma 18-250@37mm Camera: Kx Photo Location: SoCal ISO: 200 Shutter Speed: 1/125s Aperture: F5.6

Our Easter Lily Cactus which had two blooms a week ago lost those of course but seven more stalks arose and bloomed last night. They will wither and die Thursday night. The blooms always open at night around 10:00 pm and start to die around the same time two days later. They only last one day in the hot desert I understand. Why they always open at night, I don't know.

we have a cactus in our RV park in Nevada named the Giant Argentine cactus that does the same thing as yours does. The blooms come out and only last 24 hours and then fizzle out. I read where they are open at night so that moths, bats and other nocturnal species can feed. The flowers are approx. 6 inches across btw.

Bob has a point about pollination causing them to open at night. Makes sense. Lovely things though. So delicate from such a prickly source.

Thanks for all your comments. The blooms are withered this morning so only lasted one day. They sure were beautiful for their short life.

attached are photos of the Giant Argentine cactus which only blooms for one day. Each bloom is at least 6 inches wide.
