Out with the Grey Jays
Posted By: normhead, 03-28-2015, 07:07 AM

The idea is to get them flying, small birds are just so hard to get, you have to have a plan.

1. bring lots of cheese.

2. shoot at a high shutter speed, then coax the ISO down as low as you can, and shoot on a really bright day.

You might get something you try enough images.

That cheese looks delicious, keep this up and I'll end up in one of you pictures.....
I find birds with their face stuffed full of cheese funny, people not so much.

Nice series Norm, my wife likes #2 and I like #4. Thanks for putting them up!
Yes, those are the best two..... but the others provide context.

Norm, have you ever tried soft cheddar cheese? Keeps the birds at the bait a bit longer. Also works better than peanut butter in mouse traps because it cannot be licked off!
We can get as many grey jay images as we want, the park birds are quite habituated. The chore for today was to get them in flight. He fills up his gullet and then flies back to his nesting area to store the food. The files of them standing around eating for the most part get tossed. Today is one of those rare days when you get to see the baits, because trying to get them in flight on the way in to the cheese didn't work out, so I actually didn't get any good images without cheese. They take a different flight path in every time, but on the way back to the nest when they take off, they are much more predictable.

I don't like giving them a lot of cheese because of it's salt content, but this day, I held up sunflower seeds, chopped nuts, peanuts in the shell, bits of bread crumb, this day, cheese was the only game in town.

Is it normal to use a ball head as a bird feeder? That is hilarious!

BTW, it is not level :-)
