New Zealand sunrise
Lens: Sigma 18-125 DC HSM Camera: K-x Photo Location: Oxford, New Zealand ISO: 400 Shutter Speed: 1/125s Aperture: F6.3

I'm currently visiting New Zealand, based out of Christchurch near Oxford, close to the foothils of the Southern Alps. Aftyer sleeping in this morning, I raced outside to capture the most spectacular sunrise i have ever seen--it was changing quickly, missed the best, and this does not do it justice.

This shot is so well done - as Tom says, it's truly dramatic.

Thank you for the comments--everything was lit with a deep pink glow when I first opened my eyes, and in the few minutes it took me to pull some clothes on and get the k-x on the tripod, it was going gold. I took another one, facing the other direction, but it's a 44 Mb file, and just keeps failing to load to smugmug on our slow connection here.

Terrific cloud formations, and a nice golden color. Beautiful sunrise.

My rule of thumb is that when I suddenly see a great sunrise/sunset, I have about 30 seconds to capture it before it's changed significantly. Not much time for a tripod for me. So many times the great ones take me by surprise, so it's grab and shoot. The ones where I set up the tripod and wait for the show so frequently turn out fairly dull. C'est la vie.
