Takumar fun in the high desert.
Posted By: heliphoto, 06-05-2008, 04:42 PM

I've had time the last two days to shoot a bit with my recently acquired Super-Multi-Coated Takumar 28/3.5 and 50/1.4 on my K200i. Quite fun - I really like going back to manual/prime lenses. Here's my quick picks from the bunch. Feel free to tell me your thoughts/comments/criticism.

I'll make up some approximate aperture settings for these shots as they're not in the exif... All processed in Lightroom.

A spring fed pond...
28mm | iso 100 | 1/40 | f/11?

Love the bokeh on the 50mm...
50mm | iso 100 | 1/2000 | f/2?

Prickly Pear at the pond
50mm | iso 100 | 1/2000 | f/2?

Stormy Weather. The wind was steady at probably 35 knots when I took this shot
28mm | iso 100 | 1/250 | f/11?

A strange pot of gold.
28mm | iso 100 | 1/100 | f/11?

Clouds building to the east.
50mm | iso 100 | 1/2000 | f/4?

Morning rush hour - Downtown ***.
50mm | iso 200 | 1/100 | f/?

Hotel needs to call the exterminator.
50mm | iso 1600 | 1/15 | f/2?

Exterminator's built in (I had to convince myself this dude was there for my protection - spooky).
50mm | iso 1600 | 1/15 | f/2?

Ore cart gondola.
50mm | iso 200 | 1/160 | f/8?

50mm | iso 200 | 1/800 | f/2.8?

More wacky bokeh...
50mm | iso 125 | 1/1250 | f/2.8?

50mm | iso 125 | 1/1250 | f/2.8?

50mm | iso 200 | 1/800 | f/2?

Bonus points to anyone who can identify the town depicted .

Thanks Grant. Yeah, that is a quiet town. One gas station, two hotels, one restaurant. About a 20 minute drive will get you to the next town which is a bit smaller (no hotels, one restaurant...but it has a grocery store). Thanks for looking/commenting.

Too often we think of the USA as a land of cities, but there is ample wilderness with some truly spectacular scenery. Superb captures there, Josh, you're a real wizard with the Takumars.

Okay, I'll hazard a guess at the town's identity -- hiding behind my Aussie ignorance! Is it one of the old Colorado mining towns like Gypsum, on the I70 east of Glenwood Springs?

Nice work .... I need to get out more with my Taks and start shooting scenery with the 28mm.

From what I have seen with the colour rendition and contrast it is a NICE lens indeed.
I am under utilising it really.

I'm glad someone's tried to guess the town, and it's definitely an old mining town, but it's not in Colorado. I throw out a weak hint, the restaurant is named "the Silver".

Regarding the wizard compliment, thanks, but I'm much closer to a hobbit than a wizard. I just keep trying, and once in a while it works out.

Yeah, since I only got my Takumars a few weeks I'm still enamored with 'em, and I find that having to mess with the adapter ring all the time discourages me from switching out for my 18-250 that I intended to be my all purpose lens. I really find I enjoy shooting more with the primes, but I do miss a few wildlife shots which I could have nabbed if I'd had the superzoom on.

I'm 85% sure I'm gonna modify my Takumars by screwing an adapter ring on quite tightly, and grinding the little keeper hole, making them my latest k-mount lenses. I'm sure this will lower the resale value, but as I can't see parting with them, I don't really see that as much of a loss. My only fear is that I'll accidentally damage a lens as I drill/grind the retention pin hole.

I am tempted to get a spare body and leave the M42 ring in place and use it solely for screwmounts ... and keep my main body for my other K-mount newer AF stuff ... saves having to unscrew/unlip an adaptor all of the time.
