The BMW company has been around for much longer, but they are touting their Motorsports unit's 40th anniversary even though it is closer to their 43rd year.

You might be referring to BMW-M which, according to Wiki was started in May 1972.
I recall it and I see that the "Group E Production Touring Car" race in Australia in October 1972 " Hardie Ferodo 500" , a 500 mile race, had no BMW -M entrants, and no other BMW cars in the race.
But the BMW -M cars were a force soon after.

Hmm. Those appear to be in "slightly" better condition than my '99 740. Even ragged, tired, and in serious need of TLC I absolutely love driving it. Once the boys are out of car seats I'll be in the market for an M series.

I love the composition, color and POV of this great car pic. I appreciate your shot since I joined the "M-Club" about four months ago when I traded my 135i for an M4 coupe.
