Pileated Woodpecker
Lens: Sigma 50-150 f/2.8 Camera: Pentax K5 IIs Shutter Speed: 1/250s Aperture: F4
Posted By: Fat Albert, 04-25-2015, 09:07 AM

The day after I sold my DA*60-250 (of course), a family of pileated woodpeckers decides that my fallen logs are delicious. When I saw this dude this morning, I grabbed my set-up and monopod, and slowly inched forward until I couldn't get any closer. This picture is heavily cropped, but it's the best I could do.

Lucky you! I have seen some smaller woodpeckers in my area, but never one of those.

It's only the 2nd or 3rd time I've ever seen one, and my first pictures of it made all the Bigfoot/Nessie pics look good by comparison!

PS I am terrible at post processing. I'm sure someone more capable than I could do a much better job with my RAW files.

Nice shot.
I see/hear them often enough but never get a decent shot of one.

He made some impressive holes in a matter of minutes. I'll snap a few pics of those later.

I also get a kick out of how the white feathers on his left look almost EXACTLY like the pointer arrow on my computer screen
