A quick backyard test of some new equipment: 1.) a Uni-loc 1700 tripod, and 2.) a Manfrotto 410 geared head. Initial impressions are really positive--the tripod locks down tight, and the geared head makes composition much easier when one is lying on ones belly (no matter how copious that might be these days.) I can already tell it's going to be a test hauling these over hill-and-dale here in the Smoky Mountains, but I'm going to keep playing the "weak mind, strong back" card as long as the cartilage holds out.

I think of the lens as the round-heeled cousin of Kerrowdown's "Femme Fatale" (A50 2.8)...transported to the colonies and looking for a good time. (Call her... Moll...)

Oh, Moll has done a lovely job with some help from her owner. Really nicely done.

Thanks! You should definitely try a geared head the next time your up this way for the wildflowers...with Live View, it almost feels like cheating, watching the subject move around the frame. (Of course, I've not yet humped it up to Spence Field...you might get one cheap.)

Nice photo, I have the FA version, and love that lens. I like this in color more, and you'll have a great time in the mountains!

Thanks for the replies--you know how it is...the UPS truck shows up and you have to rip out the backdoor to shoot whatever weeds are at hand.

BTW, Volley: the big difference is that new gear comes with a warranty...
