Winter maintenance
Posted By: regken, 02-04-2007, 01:31 PM

Went out to shoot the sunrise this morning but didn't get any keepers. Ran into this guy working down at the docks. He has to paint 800 of these buoys every year. Day-Glo paint stinks and this was inside a very small workshop. Hope you find this a little interesting.

Regards,

I find it very interesting, Ken. Note how the pink on the Dayglo buoy matches the pink in the painter's shirt.

I've been sailing for - I hate to say it - a few decades and I've never seen Dayglo buoys - just the standard Coast Guard issue red and green ("red right returning" and all that).

Jerry, Sail up around the Maine area and you will see every color imaginable. Take a look at buoys Photo Gallery by Ken Regier at pbase.com and see just a few of the colors and patterns that are common up here.

Wow, Ken, your "buoy site" is terrific, and I can just "feel" New England. My wife and I lived in Boston a million years ago, but I've never been Down East.

Thanks Jerry. Wait till spring when I hope to catch all those different colors at the same time in the water.

That paint looks so thick! And then you see all those other buoys in the background - that's a lot of work! Nice shot!
