An Intensely Blue Bird
Lens: DA 55-300 @ 260 Camera: K-3 Photo Location: Backyard ISO: 3200 Shutter Speed: 1/750s Aperture: F9.5
Posted By: Sailor, 05-07-2015, 06:28 AM

A couple of days ago, Connie spotted a couple of intensely blue birds flittering around the bird feeder. I managed to get a shot of one, but photographing birds is definitely not my gig, so the quality is quite poor. Still, it may be good enough for someone to make an identification; she consulted a couple of "bird books" that I didn't know we own, but she couldn't make a positive ID.

I'm sure there are a number of forum members who could identify this character immediately; if you're one of them and happen to see this post, please let me know - then I can impress Connie with my vast knowledge.

Pete Ptarmigan should be around somewhere to help. I always hesitate to venture a guess as I am always wrong! My ID skills have taken a tumble as I have aged.

Plenty of them in MA. But you have to know where to look.

Look for Indigo Buntings in weedy and brushy areas, especially where fields meet forests. They love edges, hedgerows, overgrown patches, and brushy roadsides. When not singing from the tallest perches in the area, they can often be seen foraging among seed-laden shrubs and grasses.

Hey, Capn - are you home now - I'm sure you've enjoyed your vacation. Thanks for looking, my friend.

I can't remember ever seeing one of the critters before either.

If there's a good pub near by, I'll probably spot one.
