Rocky Shoals Spider Lily
Camera: K-3 Photo Location: Landsford Canal SP, SC
Posted By: slowpez, 05-21-2015, 09:12 AM

Found in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Alabama, these beautiful plants live in the fast moving waters of rocky shoals. They are known by several names depending on the state you are in. Dams have made them a species of concern. This year, at Landsford Canal, we had a wonderful display. They seemed to fill the Catawba River with a ribbon of white.

Those are very cool--in Alabama, they're called "Cahaba Lily," and really flourish on that river a little downstream of Birmingham.

They are quite a site when conditions are right.

Cahaba Lily, yes, I remember reading that. Ours grows in the Catawba River. Everyone here swears it is the largest population in the world but I can't confirm that. There are a couple of other small areas in the state that have them including the river running through Columbia.

I have no idea. You need a canoe to get close to them and that just isn't going to happen.

I have seen these flowers in gardens here and elsewhere. Wonderful to see them in their natural state. What a spectacular sight. Thanks for sharing.

Wow what a wonderful sight. I expected to see a few close up flower shots but instead there looks to be thousands of spider lilies. Thanks for showing them.

Thank you kindly. Wish I could have done them justice. We tried getting there near sunset but not too late because the sun falls below the tree line early. Didn't work too well and I just couldn't figure out how to separate the clumps from the background. Still, a beautiful sight to see.
