Owls!
Posted By: Gareth, 05-23-2015, 03:59 PM

These are a few images from last night where my camera club held a practical night with an owl sanctuary.

All with the Pentax K5ii and either Pentax DA* 16-50mm, Sigma 170-500mm or Sigma 105mm

Great portraits....and you caught the intensity of the eye of the owl.

Wonderful photos. I particularly like the second and third shot. Such detail...
I've never had a chance to meet owls up close; were these owls tame and would sit still for the photographers?

Thank you all!! Most appreciated! Lighting wise 1-3 outdoor so natural light, 4&5 using artificial room lights and 6-8 using bounced flash at 1/4 power.

Beautifully captured Gareth. I think #3, 7 and 8 are my favorites.

Thanks all! I'm certainly happy with them! Ayemusdk2004 I have no idea what you said so Googled it and got 'Aasobhan Allah' so I'm guessing the translation got lost somewhere!

An amazing set of owl images, a quick question if I may... how did you not get reflections in the eyes of the first couple of images? The reason I ask as on each occasion I've "shot" owls I can see myself in the eyes.

All very fine for a bit of fun playing "Spot The Kerrowdown", but not much good for Owl portraits, here's an example, shot outside on a normal day.

Thanks!! The opening images were taken with a Sigma 179-500mm and all taken somewhere from 400mm onwards. It was also overcast so flat even lighting

Aye 400mm + would make a difference, I'm right in the there, in their face so to speak with a “Sweetheart” (SMC Pentax-A* 85mm F1.4).
