The infamous Big Rock near Okotoks, Alberta. Probably one of the most over photographed local landmarks there is, but I think I did it justice.

Whenever I see a natural formation like this, I always wonder why is the outcrop just there... with nothing else around it?

Any geologists of the forum who can give me the insight?

Trolls.

Nice photos, though I favour the middle one.

This spot is about 20 miles east of the Rocky Mountains. The rock was pushed out onto the prairies by expanding glaciers and then left there when they receded.

Thanks. I agree, that middle photo is probably the best of the three. In all of these I really like the effect of the dandelions. They seemed to catch light like little lanterns and add some drama to the scene.

This is the rock for which the town of Okotoks gets its name. In the language of the Blackfoot natives here the word okatok is rock.
