What 1/2 Billion Dollars looks like
Lens: DA 12-24 Camera: K5IIS Photo Location: Edmonton, Alberta

Went downtown today to get a look at the new Rogers Place. Man it's HUGE ! It is scheduled to be ready for the 2016-17 NHL Season. The shape is an Oil Drop (We are in Oil Country after all ). Seating for hockey will be around 18k and a little over 20k for concerts. Price estimated at 480 million $$ we'll see what the actual total comes to. The Edmonton Oilers have not made the playoffs since 2006 and now with 4 first round picks in the last 6 years and another new coach the time is here.

Managed to get to a 7 story Parkade that was relatively close. for #1 and #3 shots.

Don't care about the Oilers (guess there's no chance of changing the name to the "Solars") but I really enjoyed the photos..

I thought Alberta was in a "rough spot" with the oil price down .... go figure!
Maybe Gretzky has something to do in there?

An imposing structure, indeed. Great photos too, my friend. I dig the bold PP for these photos - really works.

Thanks jpzk as you can imagine this project was approved (took a long time) back in the $100 a barrrell days. Katz has lot's of money (he's in the multi billionaire club) and the city and province committed some as well.

The real question is... Is it money well spent?

It looks awesome, and Rogers is paying for that? You mean they couldn't con the citizens of Toronto into paying for their stadium in Edmonton the way they got the Sky Dome. ( 400 million cost purchased from the province for 30 million.) Those citizens of Toronto must be getting smarter.

After the gift the Skydome ( now the Rogers Centre) was, they can afford it.

That's a complicated question - there is no doubt the new arena will revitalize the downtown area with hockey and concerts. The financining on such structures is more complciated than doing rubic's cube blindfolded. I am of the opinion it will do more good than harm.

Hey Norm yeah Rogers has it's name all over (Toronto, Vancouver and now Edmonton). It seems be a secret exactly what Rogers paid for a 13 year deal for the naming rights. Like I mentioned to Kerrowdown it's hard to get any concrete information but here's some ball park info :
The deal calls for the city to put up $219 million,
Edmonton Oilers owner Daryl Katz to put up $143 million
with $114 million to come from other levels of government.
A ticket surcharge would raise another $125 million.

I think what I was eluding to was... could that rather large sum of money not be put to better use, in terms of charitable works.

Well of course in the grand schema of things any money spent on anything could likely be put to better use that's not a fair comparison. This has and will produce Jobs , temporary and permanent. Increase overall activity downtown, thus overall spending which is good for the city. Katz wanted the new arena and let's make no mistake he wanted for personal profitable reasons (less overall seats , but more Corporate Luxury Boxes, etc). Having a state of the art sport facility in a City downtown core helps the City. This was a business decision to increase profits nothing charitable about it (although like any billionaire the Katz foundation does a considerable amount of charity work).
