Giant Argentine Cactus
Photo Location: Nevada
Posted By: Bob Harris, 06-07-2015, 09:26 AM

The photos are from our campground desert garden. I felt honored to happen to be staying there when this Argentine Giant cactus started blooming. This is quite an unusual cactus, it opens up during the night providing a very fragrant smell and huge up to 8 inch blooms and starts to close at daybreak. These bright colored petals and yellow centers attract night pollinators such as bats and insects and each bloom only lasts for a couple of days and fade away. The last photo was taken during the daylight and the bloom was drying up and did not bloom again. Lucky me I felt to get the photos when I did, enjoy this unusual beauty

I've seen a couple other cacti similar to this, but the blooms were not as large. These are really big, too bad they don't last longer.

thanks Norbert, we'll go back to the campground next year and see if we can catch it in bloom again. It's good practice for night photography.
