My First Flashed Hummer
Posted By: Igilligan, 06-12-2008, 02:36 PM

So this years hummers are few and far between. And they only seem to show up when the feeder is in the late evening shade of the house. So I used my Old vivitar 3500 flash that I just got, to try and light them up a bit...
These were my first attempts... I have now figured out better flash and camera settings but for two days have not seen hide nor feather of the little guys...

The last is the turtle from the local pond... usually out everyday for lunch but also has been missing the last few days...

All with the tamron 70-300 handheld...

I need to clean up my mind. When I saw flash and hummer in the same sentence I thought.... well, nevermind.

Interesting photos. Love the turtle.

The hummer in the 3rd picture is particularly "dazzling".

Beautiful shots, the flash really brings out the irridescense of the hummingbirds.

I like the second too. The first has a motion blur that I like because the eye is sharp focus, but neither of these are too good compared to some of the really excellent focus trap shots I have seen on the forums. But soon.... haha

I believe the wings are folded up in the shell Miss Smartie Pants...

HA HA... as soon as I posted this I saw it too... and I thought I will just leave it. If someone gets pulled in by outright trickery or innuendo... Made you look!

I am not tripoded or remoted yet. I am close, the feeder is about 8ft from my sliding glass door. And these are at full 300mm on the tammy.

Awww, I love hummingbirds!

You know, those little fellas are like four hours from starvation at any one time.

Thanks Vievetrick and Cupic. The shadows under the eaves of the house are difficult. It was my first attempt with my new/old manual flash. After I took these I did some practice shots to try and get a better exp/angle. Since then I have not seen any at my feeder either... so now I wait.........

my feelings exactly... also easier to shoot...

Another belly crawler for me... the turtle is very suspicious of people, I guess from all the kids trying to catch it...

I like the shadow effect Gus. First one is best, you even got the tongue. Can you imagine if we had to eat and drink that way?
