Yesterday I watched Day 1 of the Ballito Pro Surfing Trials, and took the following shots. I was pleasantly surprised at how well my old Sigma 170-500mm lens performed.

Interesting... shooting at F8.0 @ 1/2000 what ISO were you at? and whereabouts roughly within that zoom range were you?

You've certainly got the shot timing spot on with these.

I was shooting in TAv mode, so my ISO was floating, but it seemed to average at about ISO 340 or so.

Most shots were at about 400mm, and some all the way to 500mm.

I keep forgetting your in SA, where there is so much more available light, that's 6 to 7 stops difference to what I have here today.

That's why I was having trouble with my maths.

These are nice. I am not a surfer, and not really interested but hope to try it someday. I dont know if that makes sense.

I like the photos. Nicely captured.

I'll agree with previous commenters and say superb timing on these action shots! Thanks for sharing.

I have one question: how did you achieve correct white balance? Just the skin tone looks quite off in some of them even though the things I expect to be white look suitably white. In particular I'm looking at 21 and 22 as the most obvious examples. Just something to think about (of course it could be my monitor/eyes so judge for yourself).

Again, thanks for sharing your excellent work.

I must admit that I struggled quite a bit with getting the white balance right in this series of shots.

Hopefully I got it right in my next batch of shots which I took today at the final day of the competition (post to follow soon).
