The Spring Fire
Camera: Pentax K-5 Photo Location: Malibu area
Posted By: GeoJerry, 07-12-2015, 10:34 PM

About two years ago there was a very serious wildfire on the California coast and inland areas around Malibu. I happened to be driving through Malibu just before the highway was closed and got these shots. As you can see, the sun was still pretty high in the sky: these are not sunset pictures, the orange tones are due to the filtering effect of the orange-brown smoke on the sun. This gave a very strange orange glow to the water.

This one just to the north of Point Mugu.

Check out this orange glow. These pictures are all RAW's without any masking or tricky stuff, just standard Lightroom exposure, contrast, saturation, etc edits. But the orange is real, not some hokey slider or paintbrush effect.

Looking north (actually west here) along PCH south of Point Mugu.

Point Mugu. When you pass Point Mugu, you are out of the LA basin and suburbs and entering the Oxnard-Ventura area.

These kite surfers were going on as if it were just another day. I wonder if any of them got trapped.

I like that cloud color. It reminds me of the nitrogen dioxide fumes diluting copper in nitric acid.

Thanks eaglem, this was a really one of a kind lighting situation and luckily I had my camera.

Thanks plantej! Opportunistic for sure... I probably shouldn't have taken that road. It was shut down shortly after this.

Thanks dasPaul. It was a pretty nasty fire, but not THAT nasty!

Thanks luftluss! I don't think there were any casualties from this fire, but the countryside's vegetation still hasn't really sprung back much due both to the fire itself and also the drought.
