Milky Way at Superstition Mountain
Lens: Sigma 18-35/f1.8 Camera: K5IIs Photo Location: Lost Dutchman State Park, AZ ISO: 1600 Shutter Speed: Above 6s Aperture: F1.8
Posted By: interested_observer, 07-13-2015, 09:29 PM

This is from Saturday evening. I drove out to the Lost Dutchman State Park here in Arizona, about 50 miles east of downtown Phoenix. The park is on the outskirts of Apache Junction. The mountain is Superstition Mountain (or Flat Iron). The light pollution from Phoenix and Apache Junction is coming in from the right hand side, and reflecting on some of the faces of the mountain.

It was shot using the GPS-1 unit, so it's a composite. The shots were about 15 minutes apart at 8.45 and 9.00pm
  • Top or the sky - 18mm, 240 seconds, f1.8, ISO 1600 - GPS enabled
  • Bottom or the mountain - 18mm, 70 seconds, f1.8, ISO 400 - GPS disabled
I have a bit more information on this in another thread...Post Processing was in Lightroom. Just the basics and adjusting the curves along with a tad of sharpening on each. Then I used GIMP to mask and layer them together.

Oh. My. God.

That's my first reaction. Well done! Maybe remove some of the color cast from the rocks, but the blend is superbly done.

That's a terrific picture! Long night-time exposures can create odd appearances due to the different colours we're used to seeing in daylight, but there's no real arguing with what the camera sees. It would look even stranger if you superimposed a daylight shot of the mountain! Nicely done.

Very well done - I'm now expecting a close encounter of the third kind.

beautiful comp and great star results! Can you pull down some purple saturation a little? Otherwise superb!

I agree with Mike on the purple hue, otherwise this is a fantastic shot. After a little PP you should submit this to the exclusive gallery.

This shot certainly has the "wow" factor and as others have already suggested, I would be reducing the colour cast/saturation a fair bit if it were mine.
