I think it's a female red-winged blackbird (the species is named after the male).

It's a beautiful composition.

Thank you. I've been having a tough time handling that big 300 mm, so I was thrilled this came out reasonably sharp. Still room to improve, though.

I'm a newbie birder so IDs are always welcome. I checked Sibley and I think you're right. There are so many of the black and red males in the area, I guess these less vivid females kind of fade into the background. She's pretty, though.

The dark colour of the blackbird forms such a engaging contrast to the delicate yellowish blades behind. Bravo!

She is definitely a female red-wing blackbird, most likely a juvenile. You can use this site to help with ID --> Birds
Works very well for me and easier than searching through a book. Nice capture by the way too!

Your welcome, I actually learned about it in the forums here. A lot of useful birding information can be found in the 300mm plus lens club.
