She (female mallard) may be doing this to relax her neck muscles. The position also conserves body heat during cooler weather.

That's interesting; guess I need to learn more about ducks. However, I like the Yoga explanation better.

Usually, when I see a mallard with its {his or her} bill over its back, it has swiveled its neck to keep the bottom of its bill down; here, you have the bottom up, which is very usual amongst the ducks I've seen. Learning more about ducks won't help if they are like ours - but this is an interesting photo.
