The Perseid Meteor shower showcase
Posted By: charliezap, 08-11-2015, 03:26 PM

I should post this in mini challenges but most of my my fellow Pentaxians are on this page. The peak of the Perseid meteor shower is coming up in the next 2 days. They say it will be a good year but then again they always say that.Let us see your shots of the event from around the globe in the next several days. This shot was from a campground in Saiisbury Ma. last week showing the big and little dipper. The data is 30 secs at f/4 400 ISO @ 18mm with the Pentax 18-250 lens. just to give you a guide. The origin of the show will be in the NE sky about 1/2 way up after midnight. I hope that I get a decent one here in the Boston area considering the light pollution. Release the kraken and let the games begin---charliezap

I'd love to try this but don't expect I'll be able to see much in the middle of LA! What times do you expect the shower will be peaking?

Meteor spotting wasn't a total loss.Although I didn't catch one on camera I did spot 3 flitting across the sky. What I did accomplish is refining my exposures for night time star shots. On a tripod what works well for me considering all the light pollution being near the cities is 25 secs at F/4 at 800 ISO at 18mm. The first shot is without retouching and the next is the same shot with brightness and contrast adjusted which did bring out many more stars. The haze (noise) at the bottom is from the street light on the other side of my home. I'll give it one more try tonight. It's like fishing--Maybe I'll get a bite.--charliezap

Thanks, Charlie. Something I've run into the only other time I attempted this with a K-01 and K-5, and also this time with K-S2 and K-3, is that I can't seem to get the interval function to keep going for the duration of shots that I tell it to. Not even close! It generally poops out somewhere between 30-50 frames. Perhaps the sensor is overheating? don't know. I even allowed a 15 second cool down last night in case this was the cause.

I got three shots last night. Not the greatest but I was happy to get something.... Left the camera on interval shooting - a 15s exposure every 20s. K-3, Rokinon 14mm lens, f/2.8, ISO2500

The first one shows the brightest meteor I was able to capture, just entering the left side of the frame. The thing in the center is a plane.
Second shot the faint meteor is in the center of the frame and you can just make out smudgy looking M31 (Andromeda galaxy) just above and to the left of it.
Third shot shows a meteor at the top of the frame, streaking across the Milky Way.

Some good shots! I keep forgetting to try this plus getting sleepy doesn't help nor does living in the middle of an urban area.
