Lowland Scotland

Several more shots taken while wandering around the countryside in rural Aberdeenshire. It's great driving country with charming views in abundance.

The town of Pennan, on the northeast coast of Scotland. For the older folks among us, you might think this looks familiar. A few scenes from the movie “Local Hero,” which starred Burt Lancaster and Peter Riegert sometime in the early 1980’s, were filmed here.

The east coast, taken from Dunottar Castle just south of the town of Stonehaven.

A trail on the slopes of Bennachie.

Near Chapel of Garioch (pronounced gearey).

The Glen Garioch distillery in the town of Oldmeldrum.

Craigievar Castle.

The guest lobby in the Pittodrie House, an upmarket country hotel near Inverurie.

Aye... but all the good stuff is from the Highlands and Islands.

Well.... he might dispute that! Lots of highland and island distilleries too.... tried more than a handful.

I remember that bend now that you mention it. I had the little Peugeot in first gear going down...also had the brakes applied. I remember wondering how do they get commercial trucks up and down...both due to the steep incline and narrowness of the road.

One of the songs in the movie was Mist Covered Mountains. My wife and I liked it so much, we chose it as our wedding song. When you wondered whether this was Burt Lancaster's last movie, I wasn't sure. I checked and was quite surprised to see that he continued in his career and made quite a few films after he did Local Hero. I've posted the attached link,

Burt Lancaster - IMDb
Wow, he made quite a few more movies. Now I'm inspired to watch Local Hero again, may do that tonight! Thanks for the input!

No, probably has more to do with our recent trip and sampling a few different whiskies every night as part of our Scottish tradition. But you have to admit those lowlanders can make a good brew as well! We liked the Glen Garioch.

Great set. #3 is really beautifully done. #7 we call those trees seen through the windows "monkey puzzle" trees.

While we were sitting in this room we were trying to remember what the name of this tree was and we couldn't do it. Thanks for your comment and for solving that little mystery!

Most welcome. "Araucaria araucana" but monkey puzzle much easier to say. Didn't know it was grown there too. Interesting.

It's worth the effort! As GeoGerry says, it's a great place for a driving holiday with your partner and a camera. Photo opportunities wherever you look, Red Kite Ale and friendly people (witness Kerrowdown )

Lovely series.
It makes one want to go there: trouble is it is a 24 hour plane flight away!

Thanks for checking that. I was surprised to see it as I had seen these trees before and I had thought they were a tropical tree.

I can see why the Scottish settlers who came to Nova Scotia (New Scotland) especially in the northern part of the Province and Cape Breton felt so comfortable here. The terrain and scenery, with the exception of maybe the stone buildings, are very close in many respects.

Very true, We spent several days in Nova Scotia in 2011 and I was struck by the similarities.
Thanks for dropping in!
